Pedigree Puppies for Sale

Are you searching the internet for puppies for sale and dog breeders? Thinking of spending hundreds of pounds on a pedigree puppy?

The 2009 Dogs Trust survey shows that a shocking 107,228 stray and abandoned dogs were picked up from UK streets last year. Despite the large-scale efforts of animal welfare organisations, charities and local councils, on average 12 stray and abandoned dogs an hour are now handled by the authorities.

According to the Dogs Trust report, each hour:

> 5 dogs are reunited with their owners
> 3 are taken to welfare organisations
> 1 is rehomed from the Local Authority kennels
> 2 are in kennels for their seven day holding period
> 1 dog is put to sleep

So of the 107,228 dogs picked up in the last year, around 9,000 remained unclaimed and were put to sleep for lack of a home.

Despite these sobering figures, dogs continue to be over-bred and farmed because consumer demand exists for cute pedigree puppies. Huge profits are involved and dogs will suffer and die until we make a stand. Puppy farms are cruel and terrifying places. The mother will sit in the same small cage or kennel for years until she becomes too old and surplus to requirements. The puppies' life span will often be shortened by the diseases and parasites they contracted in the squalid conditions of their early weeks. The ultimate cost to you, the doting new owner, will be both finanical and emotional.

You may not think your puppy originated in a farm, but if you bought him from an advert in the newspaper, the internet, a pet shop or superstore, these outlets are often supplied by puppy farms. Papers are falsified. And even if he came from a recognised breeder or even a family friend, you have to ask yourself how responsible it is breeding dogs considering the figures above. Money so often comes before morals!

Dog rescue centres nationwide are overflowing with friendly and affectionate dogs hoping for a second chance. It is a myth that rescue dogs are dangerous, aggressive and not suitable for family life. Rescue dogs arrive in animal shelters for all sorts of reasons and many have excellent temperaments. They come in all breeds, ages and sizes. What's more, they will have been assessed by experienced dog handlers who will have a good idea about their personality and ideal home.

So many dogs are bred for a quick profit and sold without any consideration for their future welfare and happiness. With so many wonderful dogs facing death in UK pounds, consider giving one these animals a second chance.

Below are a selection of dogs currently living in rescue centres and waiting patiently for a loving home. More can be found by expanding the England & Wales or Scotland & Ireland galleries above. These lucky ones have been spared the needle for now thanks to the commitment of rescue volunteers and workers.

We hope you will consider the adopt not breed approach when searching for your four legged friend, but if you are keen to purchase a puppy, we highly recommend you visit the Dogs Trust website first for some advice on avoiding common pitfalls.
