In 1996 I was 22 years old and, up to that point, I had never seen my dad get upset. That all changed after our vet delivered the shattering news that our family pet cat would have to be euthanised. She was 16 years old and had suddenly become blind. It may be a cliché, but it was truly the kindest thing to do. We were all devastated, but this was the first time I remember seeing my ‘tough as old boots’ dad become emotional. And it surprised me. Looking back, I don’t know why it did because she (like all pets, particularly cats and dogs) had become an integral part of the family unit. We love them and they, seemingly, love us right back.
It’s been a busy few weeks at Wagtime and I’d had an idea for an article for the Rescue Dogs Blog for some time but didn’t have the chance to get it down on paper. Little did I know that current events would give me an opportunity quite so soon?
The tragic death of the two police dogs left in a car at the end of June was absolutely preventable and needless, especially as this has happened before and the Police promised that new procedures would be implemented to stop this happening again. There is now an active campaign being run by Dogs Today to raise awareness of the dangers of leaving your dog in your car, especially when the weather is warm and sunny. Because dogs don’t sweat in the same way that we do, it doesn’t have to be a heat wave to kill a dog in a car – they can overheat very quickly and die within 20 minutes on just a warm day even if a window is left open.
What a couple of months for momentous dog news! The death of Mabel, the second longest serving Blue Peter dog was announced at the beginning of May. Border Collie Mabel was on the screen for fourteen years and served faithfully alongside fourteen different presenters. Her passing was within a month of Lucy the Golden Retriever, who worked herself tirelessly on the show for twelve years. One of Lucy’s claims to fame was that she once caused mayhem when she wandered into Paul O’Grady’s BBC dressing room. His dogs promptly chased her out!
Fifty years ago in April, the first manned space flight zoomed into orbit. Sothebys, the auctioneers, have recently sold an iconic piece of space history for $2.9 million in celebration. It’s the actual small round space capsule, the Vostok 3KA-2, in which Yuri Gagarin made his historic flight.
Your Battered Old Banger Can Help Animals Get a Home
Written by DanielSo your battered old banger has finally given up the dust. It has carried your family out to countless dog walks, out on countless school runs, but one day it's just sputtered and stopped. How do you fit disposing of it into a busy working life? Sure, you can call a scrap yard, but how do you know that it will get rid of your car in a safe and legal way? Also, considering some current reports of illegal scrap yards, how do you know they've disposed of your car at all? For all you know, they could unlawfully put it back onto the road and the first thing you'd hear of it would be the parking ticket in the post four months later.
